Welcome to the 12th International Conference for Asia Pacific Arts Studies (ICAPAS), where we gather to celebrate and explore the vibrant and dynamic world of visual art, performance art, and recorded media. This year’s theme, “The Confluence of Creativity,” invites us to delve into the fascinating intersection of art and science, where innovation, imagination, and intellect converge to create new paradigms and possibilities.

ICAPAS has always been a beacon for artists, educators, and researchers, providing a platform to share their work, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration across disciplines. This year’s conference promises to be a landmark event, bringing together a diverse community of creatives and scholars to discuss how art and science inform and inspire each other in unprecedented ways.

THE CONFLUENCE of CREATIVITY: Exploring the Intersection of Arts and Science

The intersection of art and science is a fascinating realm where creativity meets analytical thinking, resulting in innovative and inspiring outcomes. Here are some notable examples:

Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo da Vinci epitomizes the fusion of art and science. His sketches of human anatomy, flying machines, and engineering marvels reflect a deep understanding of both artistic techniques and scientific principles.
BioArt. BioArt involves the use of living organisms, biotechnology, and genetic engineering to create art. Artists like Eduardo Kac, with his transgenic artwork “GFP Bunny,” manipulate DNA to create new forms of artistic expression.
Data Visualization. Data visualization transforms complex data sets into visually comprehensible and aesthetically pleasing graphics. Edward Tufte is a pioneer in this field, creating visual representations that are both informative and beautiful.
Fractal Art. Fractal art uses mathematical algorithms to produce intricate, infinitely complex patterns. These digital artworks reveal the hidden beauty of mathematical equations and are often used in various visual media.
Medical Illustration. Medical illustrators create detailed and accurate representations of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and medical conditions. These illustrations are crucial for education and research, blending artistic skill with medical knowledge.
Sound Art and Acoustic Ecology. Sound artists explore the properties of sound from both artistic and scientific perspectives. Acoustic ecologists, like Bernie Krause, study and document natural soundscapes, creating art that raises awareness about environmental issues.
Kinetic Art. Kinetic art involves movement and mechanics, often relying on principles of physics and engineering. Alexander Calder’s mobiles are famous examples, using balance and motion to create dynamic sculptures.
Light and Laser Art. Artists use light and lasers to create installations that play with perception and space. James Turrell’s work with light installations creates immersive environments that explore the nature of human perception.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Art. Artists are increasingly using AI and machine learning to create art. Projects like Google’s DeepDream use neural networks to generate surreal and abstract images, blending technological innovation with creative expression.
Environmental and Ecological Art. Artists like Agnes Denes and Andy Goldsworthy create works that address environmental concerns. These pieces often involve scientific research and collaboration to highlight ecological issues and promote sustainability.
Arts and Neuro-Science. This multidisciplinary area examines how engaging with art—whether through creating, performing, or experiencing it—affects neural activity, cognitive functions, and emotional states. There is an increasing number of research aiming to uncover the brain work during art activities.
